Learn The Different Types Of Windows!
Whenever we are asked: “What are the different types of residential windows?” our reply will be in three different but related sub categories. There are glass types and there are types of frame materials and frame or window opening types.
Glass Types
- Double strength glass
- Tempered glass
- Laminated glass
- Obscured glass
- Double pane
- Triple pane
Modern windows are made up in insulating glass units (IGU). All of the above glass types of windows can be combined into IGU units.
Frame Types
- Aluminum frames
- Vinyl frames
- Wood frames
- Fiberglass frames
- Types of Windows where the frame has two materials: ie. wood inside and aluminum clad outside
Material preference is determined by personal taste and cost.
Opening Types
- Fixed/Picture windows
- Hung windows (single/double hung)
- Slider windows
- Casement windows
- Hopper and awning windows
- Geometric windows
Many of the above window styles can be combined by mulling them together for larger opening.

Venting Your Room – Fresh Air Exchange
If your primary goal is to clear out a stuffy room or get the maximum amount of fresh air moving through a space, Casement Types of Windows are the undisputed champion.
Why casement windows? They lead the pack, along with a few specialized runners-up.
Casement Windows
Casement windows are hinged on the side and crank outward. They are widely considered the most efficient for venting for two main reasons:
- 100% Opening Capacity: Unlike single or double-hung windows (where half the opening is always blocked by glass), the entire sash of a casement window swings away, leaving the full aperture open for airflow.
- The “Scooping” Effect: Because the window pane sticks out into the exterior air, these types of windows act like a sail on a boat. They can catch breezes traveling parallel to your house and “scoop” them directly into the room.
Airflow Science: Awning & Hopper Windows
While casement windows are best for volume, these types are better for specific conditions:
- Awning Windows: Hinged at the top and opening outward. These are the most efficient for venting during rain, as the glass creates a natural canopy that keeps water out while letting hot air escape.
- Hopper Windows: Hinged at the bottom and opening inward. These are typically used in basements. Because heat rises, a hopper window is excellent at venting out the warmest air near the ceiling.
Venting Efficiency Comparison at a Glance
| Window Type | Ventilation Surface | Best Use Case |
| Casement | 100% | Maximum airflow and catching side breezes. |
| Awning | ~75% | Venting during light rain or humid weather. |
| Slider | 50% | Wide openings where outward swing isn’t possible. |
| Double-Hung | 50% | Utilizing “natural convection” (opening top and bottom). |
A Pro-Tip for Double-Hung Windows
If you have already decided on double-hung windows (the kind that slide up and down), you can maximize their efficiency by opening both the top and bottom sashes halfway. This creates a vacuum effect: cool air enters through the bottom, while the rising warm air is pushed out through the top. You can get a similar effect with single hung windows one you one windows on opposing sides of the room. Picture windows and geometric windows do not open.
Single Hung Windows – Our Most Popular Style
In our hot, humid North Texas climate, opening windows may be an occasional occurrence. Single hung windows are easy to operate and “go” with almost any style Texas home.
Depending on the Style you currently have on your home, consult with one of our experts about the possibilities. Always consider special regulations assigned by home owners’ associations and areas dedicated as historic or persevered.
