Are Your Windows Energy Efficient Enough For Frisco?

Like most of the DFW and North Texas region, Frisco is hot! July thought September is boiling hot and often reaching 100 degrees. While humidity adds a little bit to the “feels like” temperature, most of the heat gets radiated off the streets, sidewalks and buildings.

That’s why Energy Efficient Windows are a God send in Frisco!

What Makes A Window Energy Star vs. Energy Efficient?

Let’s talk about single pane windows first. Single pane window are neither energy star or energy efficient. This is because the direct solar energy from the sun – radiant heat and Ultraviolet rays enter into your home unimpeded. 100% of the energy (or high 90%) enters your home through your closed windows! Let that sink in. You don’t even have to open your window to let the heat in!

Efficiency starts with at least a second pane of glass with an air gap in between. The gap will insulate the second pane somewhat from the heat.

Efficiency extends when the outside pane (inside surface of first pane) is coated with microscopic layers of silver oxide “Low Emissivity” (Low-E) coatings. The coating acts like a mirror. It reflects the ultra violet heat from the sun (the greatest energy source known to man) and sends it back out away from your home.

Not just one coat of Low-E. You’ll want 2 coats minimum. You’ll find Guardian Climaguard glass performs quite well due to ample low-e coatings. Either Climaguard 62/27 or better performing Climaguard 53/23. The first number means how much natural light comes in. Lower percentage means nominally darker rooms. The second number depicts % of the heat reflection. Lower is better. Climaguard 70 glass does not meet newest Energy Star ratings.

Many customers of ours choose windows made with glass from Cardinal Corp, which also makes excellent residential glass. We like Cardinal Low-e366 glass for its 3 coats of low-e silver and a reasonable visible light penetration. Low-e340 will have a darker effect due to the lower visible transmission rating however, the 0.18 SHGC is hard to beat!

What Else Determines Energy Efficient Windows Frisco?

Quality and materials of the window frame for one. Low conductive materials such as vinyl, fiberglass, thermally broken aluminum, and wood frames prevent heat transfer. Think of why you need an oven mitt when cooking. The heat from the cooking surface transfers up to the handle! It would be the same with windows – as the outside surface gets warmed by the sun, the heat will try to transfer to the interior. With non-conductive materials, it can’t.
