Post Summary:
Triple-pane windows offer the most benefits in really cold climates. The reason is they increase the U-Factor (a measurement not unlike Owens Corning and other brands of fiberglass mat insulation) which helps prevent more heat loss over double-pane. They are not a benefit in Texas’ climate.

Should You Choose Triple-Pane or Double-Pane Windows DFW?
Here are several reasons why they don’t make sense for North Texas:
- Higher Cost: Since there are now 3 panes of glass rather than two.
- They’re Heavier: Heavier windows will require thicker frames to support the insulating glass unit.
- May Need Upgrade: Not all frame styles can simply be made thick enough to build in the glass unit. Vendors usually have a separate frame model for these.
- Minor Specification Gain: Watch our video for details. Negligible benefits for the cost in our hot climate. For Canada and Minnesota? Yes. Not Texas.
- Visible Light Loss: Triple pane windows will make your home darker.
- May Not Be Compatible: Since the frames and glass units are thicker, your walls and window sills, etc. may not be deep enough to accommodate.
What Potential Benefits Of Triple-Pane In Dallas Fort Worth?
Really the only potential benefits are for sound reduction (STC or Sound Transmission Class). But, there are ways to help lower sound transmission in double-pane windows. Asymmetric glass (one pane thicker than the other) or using laminated glass are effective in lowering the STC in double-pane windows.
Okay, so it does get cold in DFW but, the cold does not stick around long enough to benefit from the cost difference in triple-pane windows.

Window FAQ:
Q: Are there any benefits to Triple-Pane Windows in the Dallas-Fort Worth region?
A: Not enough to warrant the extra cost. It just does not get cold enough. Possibly negligible SHGC (solar heat gain) and STC (sound transmission) numbers.
Q: Why does my other salesman say I need triple-pane windows?
A: Couple reasons: They are more expensive resulting in higher commissions. Comparing the NFRC label between double and triple pane will show some minor benefits. Maybe a sales contest? Bottom line, Double-Pane Windows DFW are perfect for all of Texas.
Q: How much are triple pane windows?
A: Usually 50% more that double-pane and about twice the cost of larger or mulled windows.
Q: Are triple-pane windows a gimmick?
A: Not if you live in Canada or the extreme North areas of the US where they have a “real” seasonal winter. If you are, we may have a reputable company who can help. Check out our Jeff’s List.
Q: Do Triple-Pane Windows reduce noise?
A: Yes, but double-pane windows DFW and be configured with laminated glass or asymmetric glass thicknesses to achieve the same degree of sound proofing.
