What Are These Things Called Weep Holes?
Window Weep holes are small, strategically placed openings, usually found on the exterior bottom edge (sill) of new replacement window frames (especially vinyl, aluminum, or fiberglass) that are designed to provide a drainage system for any water or moisture that enters the frame.
Water, which can seep into the frame from rain, heavy wind, or condensation, collects in the sill track or internal chambers; the weep holes allow this water to exit the frame and flow harmlessly to the outside, preventing it from pooling, which could otherwise lead to mold, mildew, rot, deterioration of the window components, or leakage into the surrounding wall structure.
Windows are supposed to keep rain water out of your home. Heavy rain and especially wind blown rain like we get during severe Texas storms can still find a way into your walls.
Top quality windows, like the brands in our nearly two dozen recommended brands, are designed with window weep holes to let water escape at the bottom of the frames. If your windows do not have them, or if they are clogged, rain water can get backed up in the frame’s channels and seep into your home’s walls. This can cause dry rot, mold, and result in insect (termites) infestations.
Windows designed with weep holes are an insurance policy against these problems.
