Cutting corners when doing any home improvement project will always save a little money on the front end, but may end up costing you a lot more over time. A lot of “other“ window installers save money this way. They buy less expensive “cheaper” consumable products to get their costs down.
And by the way, they don’t necessarily lower your bid accordingly. Most often, it just lines their pockets with profit instead.
In this video, Jeff explains how choosing cheap products affects the installation cost on a small home with 12 windows.
- Cheap Foam: The least expensive foam sounds like a good deal. I mean, who sees it anyway. The problem is that it expands too much and can put too much pressure on your window frames. Your windows may not close properly if the frame gets distorted from massive foam expansion. We use minimum expansion foam for a dense, energy and draft blocking fills.
- Cheap Sealant/Caulking: The process of installing windows consumes a lot of caulk or sealant. Saving money here can offer significant savings. Not all caulk is alike and poor caulk will discolor, crack, fade, and chip over time. Exposure to the elements demands a superior product. On a 12 window job, we will probably use 2 cases of caulk. Premium caulk is more resistant to the weather and won’t have to be re-caulked every year!
- No Flashing: Flashing the window is a critical process that will seal out water so your home does not develop wood rot/dry rot and possible termites and other types of insect infestations. But, many companies skip this process completely. The Window Experts always flashes every window we install. This is why we can offer our Lifetime Leak-Free Guarantee on every installation.
- Labor Savings: Cutting corners, like the consumable products discussed in the video is just one way installation companies save some money. Another way is by using inexperienced day laborers and temporary employees as helpers. At The Window Experts, our crews receive extensive training from manufacturers as well as industry training programs. They will be ready to expand their knowledge with on-the-job training by working with an experienced crew.
