Stop Overpaying For Windows: 7 Money-Saving Tips Before You Buy
Avoid sticker shock when pricing out replacement windows for your home with Jeff’s seven tips to save money. Okay, that may sound weird…a window guy who tries to make your purchase more affordable? That’s just the kind of honesty your’ve come to expect from The Window Experts!
The 7 Ways To Reduce The Expense Of Replacement Windows:
Without compromising the Quality of: the windows, the installation, or the service!
- Selecting The Right Window Type: Operating windows (like single-hung, casements, etc.) cost more that non-operating (picture windows). If the room does not need to have an egress (fire/emergency escape) consider going with a picture window rather than an operating window. Living rooms and dining rooms are good examples. Bedrooms require an exit by safety code.
- Decorative Grids: Windows with surface mounted exterior grids(SDL simulated divided light) cost more than windows with the grids between the glass. Also, since the grids are between the glass, the windows will be easier to clean. Another thought is perhaps only getting grids on the front of the house for curb appeal while omitting grids on the windows not seen from the street.
- Buying Standard Colors: Most window manufacturers offer 3 standard colors and several custom colors. Ask your consultant which standard colors are offered because, when you upgrade to a custom color, like black for example, it will cost more. White, tan, adobe, taupe, clay, etc. are examples of standard colors meaning the material has the color mixed in before they extrude the pieces.
- Save Money On Doors: While the tips above certainly apply to doors as well, this tip applies specifically to doors and patio doors. Doors that swing open, like french doors, require more support for the frame, more hardware, and more labor. Sliding doors, on the other hand, are supported entirely by the rails on the floor.
- Using Standard Sizes When Feasible: Existing homes have almost always done some foundation settling. This is why we always measure in three different directions to order custom sized windows. Custom windows Will fit best and provide a leak free window opening. In many cases, a standard size will also work when the qualified professional installer can shim and trim the opening in order to install a plumb and square installation which is then flashed and caulked. Stock sizes are often in stock at our manufacturers and can save you money.
- Increase The Size Of Your Order: Many window companies have minimum order quantities, like a 3 window minimum. While it may be budget friendly to replace your windows in increments, it does require a lot more work on the installation company. More administration. More installation labor. More transportation costs, etc. Replacing them all at once saves on these costs.
- 0% Interest and 60 Month No Interest Offers: These offers, and other like them, sound really great. But when you dive deeper into the details you see that it’s the window dealer that has to pay for the finance charges. These “hidden” charges are rolled into the prices. Ask for a cash price to get the best deal and self finance the purchase.
